Meet the Team: Sophie

by Alison Michalk January 05, 2023

When you partner with Quiip you get the opportunity to work with a team of 24 wonderful community and social media managers. All whom bring their own fascinating stories, lives, perspectives and skills to the hive mind. To kick the new year, we’re thrilled to introduce Junior Community Manager, Sophie Burns.

When did you join Quiip?

I joined the Quiip team April 2022.

What were some of your prior roles?

Prior to this role I have been working as a freelancer in proofreading/editing/translation work, English Language education as well as working as a professional opera singer. A little bit of everything one might say.

What are some of your favourite places on the internet?

I have always loved a good blog, there is one in particular that I adore, A Cup of Jo. This lifestyle blog has an excellent community of readers who always comment on articles with thoughtful, witty and sometimes touching comments that create such an incredibly warm atmosphere. I love checking in on the latest articles and the comment section is unlike any I have seen on a blog of this kind. Other than blogs and the odd Refinery29 visit, I love Instagram, using it for anything from home decor inspiration, art project ideas, fashion and make up tips to interacting with friends with funny memes and reels.

What are the current client projects you work on?

I am currently working within the SBS Team as well as Turning Point.

What project/client stands out and why do you enjoy it?

I really enjoy working on SBS. Being out of Australia, it gives me the opportunity to check in with local news, to see the commentary of Australians on local and international news topics and to keep up to date with current affairs myself. Our team is very communicative and I have always felt well supported when facing uncertainties or new situations for me as a Junior Community Manager.

Are there any brand communities or social media that you really love?

I have always been a huge fan of Zoe Foster Blake and her beauty products, her social media from her personal page as well as that from her brands instagram account. The colours, the vibrant and down to earth conversation and the playful way in which they approach social media has always impressed me.

What does flexible work enable you to get up to outside of work?

So many things! I am always traveling for my work as a musician and this allows me to maintain steady work and schedule of my community management while also engaging in projects as an artist all over Europe.

What is something quirky or interesting about you?

I am an opera singer. This is often something that shocks people, as most people tell me they have never in their life met an opera singer. The thing most people often ask me is if I can sing a note – any note – to demonstrate my “opera-ness” or they tell me that they absolutely adore Phantom of the Opera. Spoiler alert: this is not an opera. I have always loved music, all music, and its the industry I landed in because I have always been so very moved by the music itself, the interpretation of text that is almost never English (Italian, French and German mostly) and pretty costumes on grand theatrical stages. It’s an odd thing but I love it.

What do you think the future of social media and/or community management holds?

I think that the demand is only going to keep growing. Brands are paying more and more attention to the way they interact with their customers, not only in the short term via marketing campaigns but in the long term as well. Maintaining a meaningful, consistent and easily recognisable brand identity that is communicated and monitored by people like us (!) who ensure all is above board, and that the brands and their client base are well looked after.
